Queen Alexandra Hospital
noviniti is delighted to have continued our partnership with Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) through the development of both the Main and North Entrances at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The Trust recognised that its existing retail provision did not fully meet the needs of staff, patients, and visitors, and sought to enhance the overall experience by delivering improved, modern facilities.
The first phase of the project saw the creation of a 930 sqm, two-storey extension to the Main Entrance, which opened in May 2024. Staff, patients, and visitors are now welcomed through a bright and spacious new foyer. In partnership with Compass Group UK & Ireland’s retail arm, One Retail, the site now benefits from expanded retail facilities, including an M&S Food store and a StockShop clothing and accessories outlet.
This exceptional development also features a state-of-the-art lecture theatre on the first floor, designed with 254 fully retractable seats. This flexible space can be transformed into an open-plan meeting area or divided into two separate rooms using an automatic partition wall.
The second phase of the project was completed in June 2025 and involved the redevelopment of the North Entrance, including a further two-storey extension. This phase introduced new reception facilities and a Costa Coffee, enhancing convenience and comfort for those accessing this part of the hospital. The first floor has been developed to provide additional space for Trust use.
Together, these developments represent a significant milestone in improving the hospital environment, creating welcoming, accessible, and functional spaces that better support the needs of patients, visitors, and staff alike.
Project specification
The new entrances deliver:
- Light, natural, and welcoming pathways into the hospital at both the Main and North Entrances
- Enhanced retail provision, including Marks & Spencer and StockShop at the Main Entrance, and Costa Coffee at the North Entrance
- Two-storey developments at both entrances, creating new facilities for Trust use, including:
- A state-of-the-art lecture theatre at the Main Entrance with 254 retractable seats
- Additional operational space at the North Entrance
- A Changing Places facility within the Main Entrance
