Basildon University Hospital
New main entrance at Basildon Hospital.
noviniti is delighted to have partnered with Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to fund and develop the new main entrance at Basildon Hospital. The Trust required the development to be self-funding using the income generated from the new retail facilities. Following the adoption of the IFRS 16 regulations, the project also needed to remain off balance sheet and have no impact on the Trust’s CDEL.
The first phase of the project completed in September 2022 with the opening of the doors to the bright and airy two-storey main entrance building. This project has been a crucial development for the Trust giving staff, patients and visitors a more welcoming and modern pathway into the hospital.
Walking through the doors, visitors are greeted with a large main entrance foyer with a new reception area and a retail concourse offering a suite of leading high street brands including Costa Coffee, M&S Food, WHSmith which will have an on-site Post Office and Stock Shop. These retail units will provide customers with a perfect blend of food, beverage and convenience items throughout the day.
Project Specification
The new facility also offers:
- a new restaurant for staff and visitors, with a dedicated seating area
- a new bereavement and Patient Advice and Liaison Service suite
- a refurbished multi-faith room
- new Trust administration space on the first floor
- a Hub space for Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity.
The site will also benefit from a redesigned road layout that will make it easier for vehicle traffic to get on and off site.
During the second phase of work the old tower block reception was refurbished, and a pharmacy unit built within the space. The approach to the hospital has been landscaped and this final phase of the project was completed in November 2022.

We still have some decorative work to finish but this is an important milestone in the project which will complete this autumn, and a lot of hard work and effort has gone into getting us here. The new two-storey building creates a safer, more accessible, welcoming and modern main entrance that will meet the needs of our patients, staff and the local community for many years to come.”
